About the Competition

SA Poetry Recitals

Poetry recital is a valuable and engaging part of the classroom oral language programme. This competition is designed to encourage students to enjoy reading and appreciation of poetry, to develop memorisation skills, promote good elocution and gain confidence in performing before an audience.

The competition is open to students in Primary year levels in schools within IPSHA SA's membership.  From 2017, in response to schools' demand, the competition was re-shaped to include entrants from Years 4, 5 and 6 only.

The nature of this interschool competition allows for students of all abilities to participate, firstly at class level then the top few from each class compete against others from the same year level for the right to represent their school.

Each participating student is required to recite two (2) poems - one set poem, and one student choice poem. Set poems are selected and provided to member schools by the Competition Convenor, and are selected to offer challenges in rhythm, understanding and/or particularly rich language.

Students may use the same poems for all levels (class, school and then Interschool Final ) of the competition if they wish.

One representative per school for each Year level is permitted to compete in the Interschool Final. Schools with a new or only recent tradition of participation in the Competition will be permitted two participants per year level to help them build greater experience and a broader base of involvement. Schools may have any number of choral groups representing them. Please check full details with competition staff.

Further information is available in the Entry Package and other information pages on this site, or by contacting Competition Staff in the contacts tab.
